Institute for Social Science Research (ISSR)

The Institute for Social Science Research (ISSR) is an international leader in advanced interdisciplinary social science and evidence-based policy research. ISSR  researchers work with diverse academic disciplines and collaborate with government agencies and the private and not-for profit sectors to address key Australian and international public policy  questions  in areas such as social inequality and wellbeing, education, employment, housing, social services, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander environments research and international development. The Institute also leads advances in social science and evaluation methodology, and includes researchers with expertise as diverse as direct physiological measurement, participatory qualitative methodologies, statistics and econometrics, lab and field experiments and machine learning and social data science.

About This Opportunity

The primary purpose of the position is to work in Mark Western’s research group in the ARC Centre of Excellence for Children and Families Over the Life Course to undertake research on social inequality and mobility in Australia and other wealthy countries. There is a particular focus on quantitative empirical studies using large-scale longitudinal and cross-sectional survey data.

At least 20% of time may be spent on ISSR commissioned research or activities that are not funded by the Life Course Centre. The successful candidate will have high level theoretical, research and communication skills and experience and an ability and desire to engage with external partners and translate results to non-academic audiences.

This position is located at our Long Pocket Campus.

Our Ideal Candidate

With a PhD in Social Sciences or a relevant area of applied research, or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education and training, you will also have the following skill set:

  • Disciplinary knowledge relevant to empirical studies of social mobility and inequality
  • Advanced skills in data management and data analysis with Stata or R.
  • Excellent knowledge, skills and demonstrated expertise in quantitative research methods, particularly for longitudinal and multilevel survey data.
  • A strong track record of leading and working on multiple projects and producing timely, high quality outputs and outcomes.
  • High level interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams.
  • A record of publication in high-ranking refereed journals and other research outlets.
  • High levels of personal integrity, transparency and capability.

The appointment will be made at either Level B or Level C, depending on experience and achievements. The level of responsibilities assigned to the appointees will reflect the level of appointment on this salary scale.  Please see attached PD for further clarification.

What We Can Offer

This is a full-time, 3 year fixed term appointment at Academic Level B or C.

The remuneration for Academic Level B will be in the range of $97,590.98 - $115,888.95 p.a., plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 17%.

The remuneration for Academic Level C will be in the range of $119,548.53 - $137,846.50 p.a., plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 17%.
