Sustainable Minerals Institute (SMI)

About This Opportunity

As Postdoctoral/Research Fellow in Geoenvironmental Science, your primary purpose will be to engage in BRC research projects in the area of mineralogical, chemical and geoenvironmental characterisation of mining and mineral processing wastes. In addition you will support existing and new projects with external collaborating organisations.

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Maintain and develop research expertise in the discipline of the assigned research projects within the area of exploration geoscience with emphasis on environmental geochemistry
  • Assist in the development of new research initiatives following on from the projects, and lead the development of new initiatives in some instances
  • Liaise with project sponsors and conduct experimental work at field sites
  • Prepare research reports and presentations for sponsors
  • Contribute to supervision of postgraduate students

This position is located at our University Experimental Mine in Indooroopilly, about 5kms from our picturesque St Lucia campus, renowned as one of Australia’s most attractive university campuses, and located just 7km from Brisbane’s city centre. Bounded by the Brisbane River on three sides, and with outstanding public transport connections, our 114-hectare site provides a perfect work environment – you can enjoy the best of both worlds: a vibrant campus with the tradition of an established university.

Our Ideal Candidate

In addition to holding PhD, or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education and training, in the area of applied environmental geology, the successful candidate will demonstrate:

  • Expert knowledge in the areas of geochemistry and mine waste characterisation, with a particular emphasis on applied mineralogy.
  • An ability to establish effect relationships and to represent and promote academic discipline at a university and wider community level, including industry, government and professional bodies.
  • Evidence of a contribution to research, including successful external grant applications and/or collaborative projects with industry.
  • Experience in liaising and collaborating with external agencies to develop co-operative research initiatives.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues.

What We Can Offer

This is a full-time, 2-year fixed term position, at Research Academic level A or B.

The full-time equivalent base salary at Level A will be in the range $69,342 – $92,782 plus super of up to 17%.

The full-time equivalent base salary at Level B will be in the range $97,590 – $115,888 plus super of up to 17%.
