School of Biological Sciences

The School of Biological Sciences is part of the Faculty of Science and is one of the largest and most successful biological sciences groups in Australia. The School provides unique opportunities for study or research in plant and animal biology with internationally recognised research programs spanning ecology, marine biology, molecular plant sciences and biotechnology, plant and animal physiology, insects and parasite interactions, and genetics & evolution. The School’s courses consistently rate very highly in student evaluations and this, in part, reflects our strong emphasis on practical and field-based teaching.

About the Opportunity

The primary purpose of this position will be to engage in research as part of a new collaboration that brings together industry innovators in aquaculture feed, with UQ expertise in fish physiology and immunology, and with fish nutrition at Deakin and CSIRO, to improve the performance and welfare of farmed fish in warming oceans through better feeds.

This position is located at our picturesque St Lucia campus, renowned as one of Australia’s most attractive university campuses, and located just 7km from Brisbane’s city centre. Bounded by the Brisbane River on three sides, and with outstanding public transport connections, our 114-hectare site provides a perfect work environment – you can enjoy the best of both worlds: a vibrant campus with the tradition of an established university.

For US applicants, please note that Australian Universities use British terminology, as such a Lecturer (Level B) position is equivalent to that of an Assistant Professor position in the US.

Our Ideal Candidate

Our ideal candidate, will have a PhD in the area of veterinary microbiology, immunology or aquaculture along with, theoretical and practical knowledge in the molecular biology of immunology and infectious diseases of fish. The successful candidate will also have experience with designing and running animal experiments under farm husbandry conditions as well as experience within the aquaculture industry, including the management of aquaculture rearing systems, fish husbandry and fish health.

What We Can Offer

This is a full-time, fixed term position for up to two years at Academic Research Level A.

The full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $69,342.89 - $92,782.26, plus superannuation of up to 17%.
