The award

Supervisor – Dr Dhaval Vyas

This project aims to create a mixed-reality application where low SES community members (refugees, homeless) can create their own virtual environments that they desire. This will enable a kind of storytelling for sharing experiences and empowering low SES members to re-imagine their lives. To achieve this goal, there is a demand for the deeper understanding of making practices within low SES communities.

The project will include the following phases:

  1. An ethnographic study of making practices in low SES communities.
  2. A design and development project of a novel low-cost MR kit to support non-expert design and making by augmenting contextual, accurate and interactive information into physical workspace.
  3. Evaluate the prototype in makerspaces and iterate the design process.

The successful applicant will enrol through the School of Information Technology & Electrical Engineering.

A working knowledge of ethnography, participatory design and UI/UX prototyping would be of benefit to someone working on this project.
