About This Opportunity

The Auslan Communication Technologies Pipeline project is working to develop new AI technologies for Auslan-based computer interfaces, and through this, support the development of gesture-based human-machine interaction.

As the Deaf Advisory Panel Member for the project you will be responsible for providing advice on the direction of the research project as well as insight into the ways Deaf people would interact with Auslan-computer interfaces and provide your language expertise to create a language corpus for research use.

You will be involved in focus groups, to discuss topics such as “intelligent personal assistants” (e.g. Alexa, Siri) or sign language avatars and involved in evaluating prototype Auslan technologies.

You will also contribute video recordings of your signing in Auslan for use in machine learning and linguistic research and development, and be invited to translate video recordings of signing in Auslan into English, at a sentence level and a sign level, for machine learning use

This position is located at our picturesque St Lucia campus, renowned as one of Australia’s most attractive university campuses, and located just 7km from Brisbane’s city centre. Bounded by the Brisbane River on three sides, and with outstanding public transport connections, our 114-hectare site provides a perfect work environment – you can enjoy the best of both worlds: a vibrant campus with the tradition of an established university.

Our Ideal Candidate

To be successful in this role you should be an everyday user of Auslan, be willing to undergo training as required, e.g. translation and encoding tools and procedures, and be willing to contribute video of yourself to published open source dataset of Auslan signing.

While not essential native, near-native or fluent Auslan user, Deaf or CODA experience is desirable, as is experience with and/or interest in “intelligent personal assistants” (e.g. Alexa, Siri) and other smart technologies, experience or interest in linguistics or interest and/or experience in technology design.

You must have unrestricted work rights in Australia for the duration of this appointment to apply. Visa sponsorship is not available for this appointment.

We value diversity and inclusion, and actively encourage applications from those who bring diversity to the University.
